Twos, Threes & Pre-K STEM Innovation

    The PreK STEM program has helped equip our child for a successful year as we prepare to apply her out to local independent schools. With our oldest child currently in Kindergarten, we see first hand the skills that have been introduced in the PreK STEM program are building blocks to what will be expected at the next level of education.

    I am in a unique position to see our STEM program from both a parent and an educator.  The quality of the curriculum and instruction is rigorous and seamlessly interwoven into the children’s day.  STEM isn’t a subject, but rather an umbrella, allowing the children to make connections between different concepts.  I have seen tremendous growth not only in my daughter’s knowledge of traditional Pre-K standards, but in her curiosity, critical thinking and problem solving ability.  Although we are only midyear, I know she is ready for kindergarten.

    William lights up with excitement when he identifies anything in the real world as science. Once he identifies something, he relates it to something from school or asks, “How is it made?”, “Where does it come from?”, or “Can we look it up?”.  This would not have happened without the exposure he has had, first in the STEM lab in the Threes class last year, and now in the five day Pre-K STEM program.  We are so happy that he is tying what he learns in the classroom to his experiences outside of it.

    We have enjoyed watching Bailey mature and grow this year at The Preschool. We are so thankful for the STEM program as it has provided an extensive STEM curriculum and a seamless extension to her day, which is helping her to adjust in many ways to the kindergarten experience.

As the world changes at a rapid pace, The Preschool’s curriculum continuously evolves to prepare students for success in the 21st century. Our Twos, Threes and Pre-K STEM Innovation class includes and also expands on the traditional curriculum and adopts the Project Based Learning model. STEM Innovation students engage in investigative classroom activities and problem solving through the lenses of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Our cross-curricular STEM Program is fully integrated into classroom lessons and ensures that students learn traditional academics, along with design thinking and a broad spectrum of digital and technological skills.
 
In practice, Project Based Learning asks students to identify and explore real world, worthwhile topics that require them to continually question, hypothesize, and analyze. For each project, students progress through three learning phases: planning, where teachers guide students to identify interests and questions worth answering; implementation, where children investigate and discover answers through meaningful hands-on experiences; and reflection, which concludes the project with a culminating event or activity. By working to answer questions and solve the problems of their projects, students develop critical thinking, mathematical and analytical reasoning, collaborative abilities, and a deep appreciation for how science and engineering can change lives.
